Number of Internet users worldwide reaches 2 billion: UN

The number of Internet users worldwide has mushroomed to reach the two billion mark, the head of the UN's telecommunications agency, Hamadoun Toure, said on Wednesday.
The number of mobile phone subscriptions also reached the symbolic threshold of five billion, the secretary general of the UN's International Telecommunications Union (ITU) told journalists.
"At the beginning of the year 2000 there were only 500 million mobile subscriptions globally and 250 million Internet users," he said.
"By the beginning of this year 2011 those numbers have mushroomed to over five billion mobile users and two billion subscribers to the Internet," Toure added.
Nigerian Users is about 30 million.

Yawning is contagious - even thinking about yawning is enough. After reading this fact, there is a 50% chance you will yawn.

Research shows that 11-week-old fetuses yawn. Yawns become contagious to people between the first and second years of life. When one person in a group yawns, over half of the people in the group will yawn within 5 minutes, and the rest will at least be tempted to yawn. Even animals yawn when they see another animal yawn. The average duration of a yawn is about 6 seconds, and guys yawn for longer than girls.

Malaria vaccine will it get to Nigeria...

Research published today (FRI) online in The Lancet Infectious Diseases indicates that the vaccine reduces the risk of infection by the parasite that causes severe malaria by 46 per cent over 15 months.
Malaria, which is passed to humans via infected mosquitoes, is one of the biggest killers of children in Africa.
Of the 900,000 people killed by the disease across the continent every year, the majority are children under five.
While the vaccine does not give near total protection, as those for other diseases marketed for use in Western countries typically do, it still has the potential to save large numbers of lives.
In the phase II clinical trial, 447 children from Kenya and Tanzania, aged five to 17 months, were given the RTS,S/AS01E vaccine, while the same number were given the rabies vaccine as a 'control' group. After 15 months, those who had the malaria vaccine were 46 per cent less likely to have been infected with the P Falciparum parasite than the control group. Only 11.4 per cent of those given the vaccine developed clinical malaria, compared to 19.7 per cent of the other group.

When you fall in love you lose two close friends.

Researchers at Oxford University conducted a survey asking people to describe their close circle of friends, and compared the difference between people who were in romantic relationships.

On average, when asked to list the members of their core group of friends, people name 5 friends. People in romantic relationships could only name an average of 4 close relationships. That’s an average net loss of 1 person in your friend circle as a result of adding a new person into your life. Typically this means that you lose 2 friends from your group of 5 and then add your new lover to get to a total of 4.

This core group consists of people that you see at least once a week. You may of course have many more peripheral friends. Adding a new lover into the mix will force you to budget your time differently, forcing you to lose touch with an average of 2 people in your core group.

Mr. Nigeria Kenneth Okolie ; Shut 7 Times defies death like 50 Cents

It was a horrible day for Mr. Nigeria 2010, Kenneth Okolie on the dusk of Tuesday, January 4, 2010 while driving along Festac road in Lagos, as unknown gun men ambushed him, robbed him off his jewelry and accessories worth N350, 000; and upon taking off shot at him seven times – burying 7 bullets inside his body.
Unlike 50 Cent who was shut 9 times in 2000 both men survived, Kenneth indeed your Mr. Survivor!!!

The world’s fattest man weighed 1300 pounds, laid in a bed mounted onto a truck to get to his wedding.

Manuel Uribe holds the Guinness World Record for “World’s Fattest Man”. At his heaviest he weighed 1300 pounds! He has since lost a lot of that weight but still officially holds the title. Between winning the award in 2007 and his wedding day in 2008, Uribe lost 570 pounds. He managed to do this despite the fact that he refused to undergo surgery, and he had been confined to his bed (specially reinforced to handle his weight) for the past 4 years.

Ella Unilag Student Slaughtered in broad day light...R.I.P

Ella was a second year student of Marine Science, University of Lagos. She was religious. She worked at The Rock Foundation Mission (TRF) Fellowship, Unilag. All her friends say she was a darling...she was well liked.
Some days ago, she went to visit a guy, her friend, someone she trusted. This friend drugged her.
Why did he drug her? Her friends believe it was to have his way with her. The drug must have been too strong for her because she passed out and never opened her eyes again. She died the next day at a hospital in Ikeja.
Ella was just 17+ years old.

She will be buried today at Atan Cemetry...Yaba, Unilag Road.
This is such a sad story. So unfortunate.
May her soul rest in peace...amen. And may God grant her family the fortitude to bear this great loss.
Is this Manslaughter or Murder in the first degree????

Nuhu Ribadu wins ACN Presidential Ticket

Nigeria's former anti-corruption chief Nuhu Ribadu has been chosen as the opposition Action Congress candidate for April's presidential polls.

Two other contenders stepped aside to allow Mr Ribadu to win unchallenged.

His entry into the presidential race come hours after Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan won the ruling People's Democratic Party primary.

The PDP candidate has won every poll since the end of military rule in 1999, despite allegations of fraud.

Mr Ribadu came to prominence as head of Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

While in office he prosecuted several high-profile politicians, before being sidelined after the elections in 2007.

He returned from exile in June 2010, after saying he had fled because attempts had been made on his life.

Mrs.” is actually an abbreviation for the word “mistress.

“Mistress” is the feminine form of “mister,” which originally meant “master.” Over the years people garbled the name for the married female, and the word “mistress” took on the meaning of an illicit lover, something far different than its original connotation. Therefore, married women ceased to spell out the full word, leaving “Mrs.” as the far more respectable abbreviation!

Its so sad for a country said to be the giant of Africa as i blog delegates are busy collecting Ghana must Go bag full of money in the name of PDP Convention...Nigeria we held thee!!!
New data shows that as the death toll in Nigeria is falling, the percentage of deaths that happen in the first month of life is increasing. Newborn deaths now make up 28% of all deaths under five years compared to 24% two years ago. Six out of 10 mothers give birth at home without access to skilled care during childbirth and it is in the first few days of life when both women and newborns are most at risk.

Nigerian Breweries' Heineken buys 5 more breweries in Africa...

Heineken, the world's third-biggest brewer, has acquired controlling interests in five breweries in Nigeria, expanding its capacity by nearly a third in the fast-growing African market.

The deal brings 3.7million hectolitres of extra capacity to the company, the largest brewer in western Europe.

Heineken has been increasing its presence steadily in faster-growing developing economies, notably with last year's purchase of the beer business of Mexico's Femsa.
Heineken said it had bought two holding companies from drinks and packaging group Sona, Nigeria, for an undisclosed amount.
It has a capacity of about 12million hectolitres in Nigeria.

Stephanie Seymour's Son Slams the Haters Over Mom Smooch

A kiss is just a kiss. Even if it['s a full-on mouth smooch with mom.
So says Stephanie Seymour's 18-year-old socialite son, Peter Brant II, who issued a statement on his Facebook fan page (yes, the dude has one) smacking down tabloid insinuations that a liplock on the beach last week with his supermodel mom is somehow indicative of an incestuous relationship.
How does he explain the salacious photos that have been making their way around the Net?
