Twitter Redesigns Homepage to Make Desktop More Visually Appealing

Twitter Redesigns Homepage to Make Desktop More Visually Appealing

Twitter has redesigned its homepage to give users a more ‘mobile-friendly’ feel. Although the changes come just three months after Twitter redesigned their log-in page, they were eager to make the desktop version more visually appealing.

Twitter intends to give desktop users more choice when browsing their profile. The new features include a white tool bar running along the top of the page, a larger font beneath the user’s profile image and the option to add more colour to their homepage. Users can change the colour of the compose box and navigation icons by choosing the ‘Design’ tab in their ‘Settings’.

Users are also able to view their cover photo behind their profile picture. Although this is already accessible in the mobile version, this is the first time the desktop homepage has had this option.  According to a Twitter spokesperson, the new desktop design should be available to everyone in the ‘…coming days…’

The #SmackCam phenomenon

The #SmackCam phenomenon

Remember the old 90’s Tango advert ‘You’ve Been Tango’d’ when the big orange man came up and smacked a bystander’s face. It now back in the form of Twitter Vine #SmackCam.

SmackCam began as a fun game between MAX Jr., Jerry Purpdrank and their friends. It’s now exploded into Vine’s newest craze.

The idea behind #SmackCam is that you catch a friend or family member by surprise and record yourself smacking them in the face.

SmackCam-ers, as they’ve been dubbed, now use lotion, powder, food and whipped cream on their victim’s face. However, some people have moved on to hit their victims with hard objects such as ironing boards, balls and even bats – which obviously can seriously harm someone.

Not only that, but some people are using #SmackCam as an excuse to hit total strangers or to get revenge on people that have wronged them.  Isn’t that assault?  Some distasteful ones include SmackCam-ers hitting young children and animals.

Word of advice – don’t do #SmackCam to strangers, little kids or animals – you’ve been warned…

So if you want to do #SmackCam the right way remember these simple rules:

  • Don’t do #SmackCam to your parents, guardians or elders (especially if you live under their roof).

  • Don’t do it to strangers because you could be charged with assault.

  • Don’t use heavy objects such as bats or ironing boards.

  • Don’t do it to animals or young children.

  • Don’t use anything flammable (goes without saying).

  • Make sure you do something you won’t mind being done to you.

  • Remember to make sure that your phone is recording so you don’t have to do it again.

  • Only use items that can be washed off and that aren’t painful.

  • Only do it to someone who is a good sport.

  • Make sure you have a clear escape route – you don’t want to get a beat down do you?

Twitter, Inc prepares for IPO hires Google Exec

Twitter, Inc prepares for IPO hires Google Exec

Recently Twitter, Inc hired the Google, Inc advertising executive to lead its retail sector. It is speculated that the company is expanding its workforce in order to expand its business before offering the new services to the public.

Who was hired by Twitter, Inc?

At Google, J.J. Hirschle was in charge of the media and entertainment advertising. But at Twitter he will be working on selling advertising products to retail companies. According to the spokesman for Twitter, Will Stickney, J.J. Hirschle will start on October 28, 2013.

The hiring process was not intended but as Twitter was building up its advertising business by reaching out to the retailers they needed someone experienced to lead the effort. After Facebook, Twitter is one of the leading social networking website on the Internet. Twitter disclosed in S-1 prspectus that it is growing revenue from advertising even though it remains unprofitable.

In order to stay ahead with rest of the competition Twitter is increasing its workforce aggressively. According to Twitter, the company added 300 employees in the third quarter. Increasing its workforce size to 2,300 in total. It is rumored that Twitter is planning to lease a 320,000-square-foot office space adjacent to its San Francisco headquarters.

This isn’t the only time Twitter, Inc hired someone from Google. Matter of fact Twitter hired Shailesh Rao from Google in 2012. Shailesh Rao was in charge of the Google’s display-advertising sales in Asia. It is not clear whether Twitter, Inc  will be hiring talents from other companies or not but it is not unusual to see employees from Google to go to Facebook, Facebook to Twitter and swap between these technology giants.

Do you feel Twitter made the right decision by hiring J.J. Hirschle? Since Twitter’s advertising sector is still not profitable do you think going public or utilizing the retail market will help twitter increase its revenues?
