Smart Sock to tells you when your baby has stop breathing

Smart Sock tells you your child’s heat rate and oxygen level.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome {SIDS} is rare; however it’s still the common cause of death in newborn babies. This is terrible because just over 300 babies die from SIDS in the UK each year. Lots of parents are lying in bed and constantly stressing whether their babies have stopped breathing. Therefore students at Brigham Young University are developing a high tech smart sock  to help ease parents’ worries.

The new baby wear Owlet is the first ever baby smart sock. The smart socks have the ability to transmit child’s heart rate and oxygen levels. It also transmit, sleep quality, skin temperature and sleep position (rollover alerts) to a parent’s Smartphone or other internet-based devices.

Owlet Baby Care Founder/CEO Kurt Workman, soon to be dad has had a cousin passed away from SIDS.  So he knows the parents’ worries whether or not the baby is getting enough oxygen. However the idea didn’t come to Workman until he was caring for his premature twin cousins.

The Pulse Oximerty is the technology behind the Owlet Vitals Monitor in the smart sock. Pulse Oximerty has been around for decades in hospitals and paediatricians. It uses red and infra red light to measure oxygen level and heart rates. Many parents have used it unknowingly and if they want to buy the hospital version it would cost them around $1,000.

However the Owlet Vital Monitor should not be used for diagnostic purposes as it’s not a medical device. The owlet uses an innovative four-sensor pulse oximeter that allows for nine different reading combinations. Owlet’s monitor is a vast improvement from the hospital oximeter which only allow for one combination of light and sensor.

The new design allows the owlet monitor to automatically adjust data read for foot growth, movement, and various levels of ambient light. The monitor will work on an infant of two years old has long as the socks fits the child’s foot. The Owlet Baby Care project was been rejected by well known crowd funding site KickStrater for being a baby product. So they decide to do a self-starter campaign on their website to raise $100,000.

Smart Sock App 1-PING

Workman said that Owlet is the most prepared Crowd funding project ever. The reason is that they have already been working with American manufactures; also electronics are fully functional and ready to be mass produced. The final touches, programming and sock design are also finish.

They have also developed a monitor app which is already in the Apple approval process and still in the development process for android.  The information from the smart sock will be transmitted via Bluetooth 4.0 to the app. The app will give you real time  info for your child’s oxygen level, heart rate, skin temp, sleep quality and sleep position.

The company has already raised $34,136 out of its $100,000 target and has just 29 days left.  The company is offering an early bird price of $159 for the Owlet Vital Monitor. So, if you would like to be a part of this project just go here and pledge so that they can be shipped in November.
